Registration Deadline on Friday, July 30th for AFSCME "Next Wave" Convention

CATCH THE NEXT WAVE!
Registration Deadline is TOMORROW, Friday, July 30th

AFSCME's young activists will come together for the Milwaukee Next Wave conference on September 9, 10 and 11.

The event will focus on our union’s efforts to recruit, engage and educate younger members to step up and carry on the legacy built by Wisconsin’s history-making AFSCME leaders.
The registration deadline is TODAY! REGISTER NOW!

Financial assistance is available to help up-and-coming AFSCME activists attend Wisconsin's first Next Wave Conference to be held in Milwaukee in September.

All three of Wisconsin's AFSCME Councils are sponsoring the event, and all three are making provisions to help make sure young activists can make it to Milwaukee on September 9, 10 and 11. But financial assistance is limited, so members interested in attending should act now.
Registration materials and a draft agenda are now posted at www.wiafscme.org. (click on the Next Wave button on the left side of the screen).

For information about possible financial assistance, contact your own Council.

Council 24 can be reached at 608-836-0024 and find more information at www.wseu-24.org.
Council 40 can be reached at 608-836-4040 and has information posted on its web site at www.afscme40.org.
Council 48 can be reached at 414-344-6868 and through its web site at www.afscme48.org.

State Employees Come Through for Appleton Food Pantry

State Employees Union Comes to Town,
Presents $7,000 Donation Plus Food to Local Food Program

When members of the Wisconsin State Employees Union, AFSCME Council 24, came together for their 78th Annual Convention in Appleton, they brought $7,000 and hundreds of pounds of food for an area food program.

The union collected non-perishable food items and cash donations for the St. Joseph Food Program, which serves 1,000 families a week throughout Winnebago, Outagamie, Waushara and Calumet counties. Not only did members attending the convention bring donations, the union matched cash donations made by its 22,000 members across the state.

"We work on the front lines of public service. We understand the stress this economy has placed on families and we want to help out. Council leaders have been impressed, but not surprised, by the response we've gotten from our members. Clearly, they get it," said Council 24 President Bob McLinn.

The food program donation was a new feature at a Council 24 convention. But it will not be the last time the Council builds a community service project into its annual gathering. The first resolution approved by delegates at this convention committed the Council to including a community service project in the agenda for all future conventions.

"Our members make Wisconsin happen every day on the job, so it is only natural that they would want to make things happen for any community that is hosting them," McLinn said.

This year's convention drew nearly 200 delegates and more than 50 guests to Appleton's Paper Valley Hotel.

We Need to Talk - Eau Claire Community Forum

Dear Brothers and Sisters;

As all communities across the country struggle with their budgets, public sector workers seem to be receiving undue criticism of their wages and benefits and citizens appear to be losing sight of the very services that are delievered on a daily basis by public sector workers. "The Alliance for Strong Communities" supported by AFSCME will be holding a community forum in the Eau Claire area next week. We urge all of you to take the time to participate in this community discussion and hopefully arrive at a solution for where the Eau Claire community goes next. Bring your family, neighbors and friends to this very important community forum.

Join us to discuss where we go next:
