Don't blame the protesters
He went on further to say that the law enforcement costs will be around $8.1 million. "Peaceful" protesters cannot be held responsible for the "over reaction" of Governor Scott Walker and Secretary Huebsch. To blame peaceful protesters who did nothing to command such a major police presence is wrong.
It is very possible that if Scott Walker and the Wisconsin Republicans would stop with their outright attacks on Wisconsin Working Families, the poor and the elderly so that the rich in Wisconsin could continue to pay less than their fair share of taxes and the same with corporations then maybe, just maybe, peaceful, honest and good citizens of Wisconsin would not need to assemble in masses outside the capitol.
U.S. Senator Announces He WILL NOT Seek Fifth Term, Will RETIRE
(202) 224-5653
5/13/11
MILWAUKEE – U.S. Senator Herb Kohl today announced that he will not seek another term in 2012. Kohl is currently serving his fourth term in the U.S. Senate, which will expire at the end of the 112th Congress on January 3, 2013. He delivered the following remarks from his Milwaukee Senate office this morning:
"On a day much like this one, in May, 1988, I announced my intention to run for the United States Senate.
"I promised then that if the people of Wisconsin sent me to the Senate, I would work my heart out every day. And I would be nobody's Senator but yours.
"Every day since then I have done my best to keep that promise to the people of the state I love.
"The greatest honor and the greatest responsibility of my life has been to serve as Wisconsin's United States Senator. But I have never believed this was my Senate seat. I always knew and understood that it belongs to the people of Wisconsin. At the end of this term, I will have served in this office for 24 years.
"So even though I continue to love this job, I have decided that the time has come to give someone else the opportunity to serve. Therefore, I am announcing today that I will not seek another term as your Senator. Rather, I will devote all my energy and time in the next 19 months to continuing to serve the people of our state.
"As you know, I spent much of my life in business. At Kohl's, as well as at the Bucks, we had the best employees to be found anywhere. They always put the customer first.
"As a Senator, I have had the finest staff anyone could ever have. And they have always put the people of Wisconsin first on every issue, large and small.
"I've always believed that it's better to leave a job a little too early than a little too late. And that's how I feel today. The interest and energy I have for this job will find a new home at the conclusion of this term.
"Finally, I cannot sufficiently express my gratitude to all the fine people I've met along the way. From one end of Wisconsin to the other – from Milwaukee to Superior, Kenosha to Eau Claire, LaCrosse to Green Bay, Madison to Wausau, and all points in between – the people of Wisconsin have been enormously kind and generous to me and I have attempted to return their friendship and trust with an unremitting effort to improve the quality of life for everyone in our state. They have enriched my life in so many ways and it has been an honor and a privilege to serve you and each and every person throughout Wisconsin."

Voter ID on its way to becoming law in Wisconsin
Democrats offered more than 50 amendments in a debate that lasted until late in the evening. None of the minority party amendments was adopted.
The state Senate is poised to take action on the voter ID bill (2011 Assembly Bill 7) next week, in keeping with the goal of Republican leaders to make the bill become law in Wisconsin as soon as possible. The voter ID requirement will become law in 2012, but some parts of the bill will go into effect immediately.
AFSCME opposes any law that would complicate the process of voting. AB 7 creates a complicated set of rules that citizens will have to heed in order to vote. It comes at a time when the federal REAL ID law is to go into effect, making it harder to obtain driver's licenses, among other things.

"Two-thirds of Wisconsin corporations don't pay state income taxes."
Read the entire "PolitiFact" where the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel researches the claim of One Wisconsin Now that 2/3rds of Wisconsin Corporations don't pay state income taxes and finds the claim "Mostly TRUE".
Fighting Against State Employee Furloughs
We are in the process of reviewing our options, legal and otherwise, for similar consideration.
While we don’t begrudge the ADA’s, we feel quite strongly that the governor and legislators need to do the fair thing and treat all state employees in similar fashion. One wonders whether the word “fair” exists in Fitzwalkerstan…
AFSCME Council 24 Membership Drive
We will have a booth set up at the Saturday, May 14th rally on the Wisconsin Avenue side of the State Capitol, where any state employee can renew their membership and support the fight. All that you need is a blank, voided check OR your credit card. As we have said, this is important. The union is the only thing between Scott Walker and the total destruction of Wisconsin’s values. We stand ready to continue representing you, fighting for you, lobbying for you, and are committed to changing the political scene.
Saturday, May 14th "We Are Wisconsin" Rally
The focus is again to send a clear message to the governor and legislators that stripping our rights and destroying Wisconsin’s values in the state budget process is not acceptable.
In all likelihood, the Joint Finance Committee will begin taking executive action on portions of the budget proposal during the week of May 16th. We need to make sure they know we have not gone away, and that this underhanded, irresponsible, wrecking-ball behavior and attitude is unacceptable to the vast majority of Wisconsin citizens.
Now that the weather is warmer, and there is no snow in the forecast, it should be a great day to bring the family to Madison and spend an afternoon fighting for and protecting what is yours, as well as the State of Wisconsin’s.

Public employees are not the cause of Wisconsin's budget woes
A new policy brief from COWS offers data on Wisconsin's public-sector workers. They are neither the "haves" Governor Scott Walker makes them out to be, nor are they the cause of Wisconsin's budget shortfall.
The brief, Wisconsin's Public Employees: A Foundation for Quality of Life in the State, presents information answering key questions:
1. Are public-sector workers overpaid? No.
2. Is the public sector bloated in Wisconsin? No.
3. How do public employees' concessions affect take home pay? The less you earn, the more you lose.
Public-sector workers: The source of Wisconsin's budget deficit? No.
Some 383,300 Wisconsin workers hold full- or part-time jobs in the public sector, and three of four of these workers are employed by local units of government. Public workers provide the education, public safety, and other public infrastructure that is a foundation for quality of life in the state.
