A solution in search of a problem - JSOnline

"A solution in search of a problem"

Despite the fact that two trial courts have declared Wisconsin's new voter ID law unconstitutional, Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen wants to bypass the appeals court and have the state Supreme Court take up the case and reinstate the law for the November general election. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel took a dim view of Van Hollen's antics in an editorial entitled "A solution in search of a problem." The state's largest newspaper concluded: "Voting is a fundamental right in a representative democracy. Our history is littered with base attempts to deny the vote to selected classes of people. Voter ID is one more example."

Even if the state's highest court grants Van Hollen's wish and immediately blesses the law, that doesn't necessarily mean the law will be in effect for November's election. There is a separate legal challenge being heard in federal court and on October 10 the judge will consider a request for a temporary injunction blocking implementation of the law. If granted, the federal injunction would trump any state Supreme Court action.

Wis. OKs electronic docs for voter registration : Madisondotcom

Wisconsin residents may present electronic documents as part of the voter registration process, state elections officials decided Tuesday. Under Wisconsin law, voters who register by mail or on Election Day must provide a document at the polls showing proof of residency, such as a utility bill, a tax bill, paycheck or bank statement. The state Government Accountability Board, which oversees state elections, had required those voters to show paper copies of their documents. The AFL-CIO, the liberal-leaning Institute for One Wisconsin and Wisconsin Election Protection, a group affiliated with the American Civil Liberties Union, asked the board to allow voters to print out electronic documents or show poll workers documents on a laptop or smartphone.

David Macaray: Union Busting 101

… But something emerged in the mid-1980s that has the potential to be even more damaging than anything that came before it. Having concluded that they couldn't destroy union solidarity by attacking, isolating or starving it, management seized upon an alternative tactic that no one (or few) saw coming. Companies discovered that solidarity could be broken down from the inside, by corrupting it. This was done by introducing something called "special assignments." A special assignment is an arrangement where hourly workers are taken off their regular jobs and assigned to non-bargaining, non-supervisory tasks for periods ranging from one week to, literally, several years.

Returning normalcy to the Capitol

New Capitol Chief, NEW problems or actually a rebirth of the Governor Scott Walker's world of "make believe".

Create and Overstate FEAR to the people and they will belive it. This seems to be the anticipated action of the NEW State Capitol Police Chief. A small group of Capitol Singers assembles everyday to sing peaceful songs and now the NEW Chief would like people to believe that they are a threat and a disgrace to the daily affairs at the People's House (State Capitol). He wants it to stop and he implies he will use any tactic he can create to make it stop.

AFSCME | AFSCME Founder’s Grandson Eyes Seat in Alaska State Legislature

In the past few weeks, AFSCME members in Anchorage, Alaska, rallied behind Statehouse candidate Andy Josephson, who vowed to bring “new energy to a new district.” But before he officially declared his bid to represent the 132,000 residents of Midtown District 15, not many knew that this 48-year-old lawyer and former teacher is also the grandson of Arnold Zander, the first president of AFSCME. ….. In 1932, Zander formed the Wisconsin State Employees Association (WSEA), which would later become AFSCME after it was granted a charter by then American Federation of Labor (AFL) in 1936.
