Kloppenburg Right to Make Sure That Every Vote Counts
A recount in the Supreme Court race is entirely appropriate given the record-breaking turnout, questionable vote reporting in Waukesha County and the razor-thin margin in the race, said Marty Beil, executive director of the Wisconsin State Employees Union, AFSCME Council 24.
"The citizens of Wisconsin deserve to have their confidence restored in elections after the result was reversed based on botched numbers from a clerk who used to work for one of the candidates," Beil said.
"The turnout in this race was far beyond the norm, and this appears to have stretched the system.
Mistakes can happen. And in a race this close, every voter deserves to know that his or her vote was counted," Beil said. Wisconsin law clearly anticipates such questions and provides for a recount in races that are this close.
"Too many questions hang over this election, and we appreciate JoAnne Kloppenburg's diligence in standing up for the integrity of our elections," Beil said.
