City of Milwaukee Opposes Senate Bill 11 (Budget Repair Bill)

Milwaukee Common Council officially opposed State Senate Bill 11 (budget repair bill) on a 9-2-3-1 vote today.

The following is from Milwaukee Alders Milele Coggs and Ashanti Hamilton:

"Today the City of Milwaukee through a majority of its representative members of the Common Council has very publicly taken a stance of opposition to SB 11 (the State Budget Repair Bill). As the largest City in the state we thought it essential to have our position of opposition to the bill in its entirety be known. Whether it is the constitutionality of some components of the bill, the alterations to Badgercare, the no-bid sale process for power plants or the pitting of private vs. public employees through the virtual elimination of collective bargaining, we as a City see far greater harm and loss emanating from this bill than benefit. Thank you to my colleagues who had the courage to stand up for the people we represent."
-Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs

"The city of Milwaukee is comprised of taxpayers in the public and private sectors. Their local representatives voted today to oppose Governor Walker's Budget Repair Bill in its entirety. The citizens of this city have a tradition of supporting fiscally responsible government and rejects the notion that this so-called budget repair bill is a good deal for taxpayers. Even the most conservative members of the city council have parted ways with Walker and support a more sensible and honorable approach to dealing with the budget."
-Alderman Ashanti Hamilton

Vote totals:
The IA resolution opposing the entirely of SSSB11 - sponsored by Alds.
Coggs and Hamilton - was 9-2-1-3. (Alds. Puente and Witkowiak voted no, Ald. Donovan was absent, and Alds. Davis, Bohl, and Dudzik abstained.)

Peace, Love, and Justice,

Milele A. Coggs, J.D.
6th District Alderwoman
City of Milwaukee
